In Varanasi's weaving lanes, a kinkhab weaver sets the warp before dawn. Two strands of zari thread, each carrying equal weight, are brought to the cross, what weavers call the lock. Until that crossing, cloth has no structure. After it, every subsequent thread knows where it belongs. Brocade patterns exist because of what happens at one point. Some designs carry this geometry. Two arcs of round brilliant diamonds meet at a precise centre, pull against each other, and hold. Wear one close to the ear. Let the occasion catch up.
"The cross is where the setter earns it. Two pavé arcs meeting at angle, if stones don't grade down at convergence, the design fights itself. We got that right. You'll feel this earring before you notice it."
